Paviom will be taking a stand and joining other key players in the lighting industry at the launch of LuxLive in November 2011. The exhibition is set to be the most exciting, innovative and ambitious lighting event ever staged in the UK.
Launched by the Lighting Industry Federation and Lux magazine, LuxLive will take place from 9th-10th November at Earls Court, London and is designed to offer state of the art lighting solutions for offices, retail, industry, warehousing, education, hospitality and the public sector.
The exhibition is set to attract everyone from architects, building services engineers, planners, facilities managers, specifiers, lighting designers, estate managers, energy reduction specialists and contractors. It is a chance for visitors to find out how to use lighting creatively whilst dramatically cutting carbon emissions and reducing energy bills.

The PLDC is organised by VIA Verlag, publisher of the Professional Lighting Design magazine and co-organised by the Professional Lighting Designers’ Association, PLDA. The convention comprises a three-day conference, a manufacturers’ exhibition and a Gala Dinner during which outstanding achievements in lighting design will be recognised.

Landscape architecture firm Dan Pearson Studio recently installed the visually striking Strobilus major pendant from lighting specialists Paviom. Designed by Jonathon Coles, the Strobilus major takes inspiration from the open pinecone and utilises 100 leaves made from 100% recycled paper pulp mounted on a recyclable body. The overall effect is a soft and organic shape that brings a warm and pleasing ambience to the studio.
Dan Pearson Studio has an International reputation for garden design excellence. The team at the studio specialises in horticulture, an intuitive approach to the organisation of space and the practice of ecological and sustainable design principles. It is for these reasons that the Strobilus lamp was an obvious choice for the studio, which had been looking for a nature-inspired pendant for some time.
Dan Pearson Studio is located in a converted Victorian Board school with bare brickwork and white painted brick walls and the Strobilus major lamp now defines the meeting room area bringing an element of nature and wow factor to what was a relatively blank canvas.
Drawn from nature itself, the instantly eye-catching Strobilus major is a sculptural organic design with a strong environmental focus. Formed entirely from recycled paper pulp, the carefully arranged leaves, which spiral as they would in nature, diffuse light beautifully and reduce glare. Each textured leaf individually warms, shifts and softens bright light so that space is illuminated naturally and efficiently.

Amid increasing focus and divided opinions on lighting public spaces, exterior lighting company Paviom, has been selected to provide industry support for a newly commissioned study to look at how cities can balance the conflicting requirements of creating urban identity and maintaining a low-carbon economy. The project, entitled Cities in the Shade: New Strategies for Sustainable Lighting in the Public Realm, is a collaboration between the Helen Hamlyn Centre at the Royal College of Art and the Megaman Charity Trust Fund.
The project aims to explore the psychology of lighting the public realm and the practicalities of place making while reducing energy consumption. However, as sustainability in lighting is not just about energy efficient light sources, the project will also explore the role lighting can play in creating sustainable urban communities.
The two-year study will be led by Helen Hamlyn Research Associate Megan Charnley, a graduate of the RCA’s Department of Architecture. Professor Jeremy Myerson, Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre, said:
"Cities are seeking to move towards lower-carbon economy and powerful exterior public lighting schemes are not without its opponents - having received much media attention in recent times. Therefore, it seemed that the time was right to look at how lighting can contribute to sustainable urban development."

The Paviom stand at LoveLight featured two striking pendants. One was the instantly recognisable Strobilus pendant, created by lighting designer Jonathon Coles. But the second product lighting up the venue's grand alcoves was a brand new addition: Strobilus Minor, the downscaled version of its predecessor (now known as Strobilus Major). The smaller pendant, displayed for the first time at LoveLight 2010, features leaves made from recycled paper pulp that are shorter in length and greater in number than Strobilus Major Jon Hinton, Paviom's technical manager, helped put the pendant together on the morning of the event. "The leaves are closer together in the new model, so the overall effect is far more compact —iust like a pine cone," he said.
