Dan Pearson Studiois Inspired by Pavioms Work of Art

Landscape architecture firm Dan Pearson Studio recently installed the visually striking Strobilus major pendant from lighting specialists Paviom. Designed by Jonathon Coles, the Strobilus major takes inspiration from the open pinecone and utilises 100 leaves made from 100% recycled paper pulp mounted on a recyclable body. The overall effect is a soft and organic shape that brings a warm and pleasing ambience to the studio.

Dan Pearson Studio has an International reputation for garden design excellence. The team at the studio specialises in horticulture, an intuitive approach to the organisation of space and the practice of ecological and sustainable design principles. It is for these reasons that the Strobilus lamp was an obvious choice for the studio, which had been looking for a nature-inspired pendant for some time.

Dan Pearson Studio is located in a converted Victorian Board school with bare brickwork and white painted brick walls and the Strobilus major lamp now defines the meeting room area bringing an element of nature and wow factor to what was a relatively blank canvas.

Drawn from nature itself, the instantly eye-catching Strobilus major is a sculptural organic design with a strong environmental focus. Formed entirely from recycled paper pulp, the carefully arranged leaves, which spiral as they would in nature, diffuse light beautifully and reduce glare. Each textured leaf individually warms, shifts and softens bright light so that space is illuminated naturally and efficiently.

Huw Morgan, Managing Director at Dan Pearson Studio commented: “The Strobilus pendant has real sculptural presence in the studio and has elicited many positive comments from visitors. The environmental credentials of the pendant were a real bonus as our aim was to utilise lighting that was striking and met with our own sustainable design principles."

The Strobilus major measures 1050mm in height and 895mm in width and is available in two standard finishes: natural paper pulp and pure white, the pendant can also be produced in bespoke colours using natural dyes. In addition, a downscaled version of the pendant is available called the Strobilus minor, which features leaves that are shorter in length and greater in number than the Strobilus Major.

For further information on the Strobilus visit www.paviom.com or call Tel:01293 804688 to request a copy of the Paviom brochure.

The National Trust lights up for Christmas

Paviom recently supplied Crescent Lighting with exterior HID lighting projectors for a festive lighting scheme at The National Trusts Trelissick Gardens in Cornwall, just in time for Christmas. Paviom provided Tersus floodlights and Elencho spotlights, which were used throughout the five acres of garden as well as the iconic Water Tower.

Elencho is a family of six high-performance symmetrical projectors. With LED and HID light sources found in the same aesthetic form, Elencho is suitable for a wide variety of applications which guarantees product uniformity that can be achieved across a total project.

Tersus is a range of three stylish asymmetric HID projectors offering high performance with precision in an aesthetically pleasing form. Tersus projectors can be wall, ground or column mounted.

The illuminations allowed visitors to enjoy a new night-time experience. Many of the trees and shrubs were floodlit with a range of white and colour to create drama and interest.

National Trust Gardens Manager John Lanyon commented “We are really pleased with the combination of floodlighting and colour changing effects that bring the gardens to life at night, and the high quality of the products used."

New Fire Rated Downlights from Paviom

FAST INSTALLATION WITH PATENTED UTEKTON FIRE PROTECTION

Architectural lighting specialist Paviom is launching a new range of Fire Rated Downlights that incorporates the patented UTEKTON System, which seals the ceiling aperture in the event of a fire and eliminates the need for a separate fire hood in a fire-rated ceiling. Featuring an easy to install ceiling clamp fixing system, these single & twin lamp downlights are quickly installed whilst retaining the BRE fire rating for 30, 60 and 90 minutes.

Most fire rated downlights currently on the market use a traditional intumescent strip which, in the event of a fire, expands to fill ventilation holes in the downlights and any gaps around the fitting itself. However, intumescent strips are expensive and can degrade over time affecting the original fire performance levels. This new range of Fire Rated Downlights from Paviom has been designed to offer an effective alternative to the intumescent strip. It’s patented UTEKTON system uses a spring shut fire seal system that includes a sealing plate and sacrificial spacer. Under normal conditions, this sacrificial spacer provides a platform for a sealing plate to sit on, keeping the ventilation holes clear and allowing the lamp to offer its optimum performance. In the event of a fire, the sacrificial spacer melts allowing the sealing plate to drop down and block these holes to halt the spread of fire.

For ease of installation, the Fire Rated Downlights are installed using a patented ceiling clamp fixing system where a hole is cut into the ceiling and an upper plate fitted through the hole and slotted into place. A lower plate is then positioned and screwed to the upper plate through the ceiling and, once this is in place, the structural integrity of the ceiling is restored. The lamp can then be fitted with a simple twist and lock mechanism helping to save time on site. This provides a ‘first fix’ option securing the clamp in the ceiling whilst wiring and decorating continues. The heat diffusion of the lamp and its ventilation negates the need for a fire hood.

Paviom’s Fire Rated Downlight range consists of three sizes, FRD80, FRD120 & FRD170 in 13W to 32W lamp options including a twin horizontal version. An 8W PAR 20 LED reflector lamp version from Megaman with an emergency option is also part of the range, which is complemented by seven alternative bezel glass options. All products are manufactured to the highest quality standards and comply with current UK Building Regulations.

New strategies for sustainable lighting

Amid increasing focus and divided opinions on lighting public spaces, exterior lighting company Paviom, has been selected to provide industry support for a newly commissioned study to look at how cities can balance the conflicting requirements of creating urban identity and maintaining a low-carbon economy. The project, entitled Cities in the Shade: New Strategies for Sustainable Lighting in the Public Realm, is a collaboration between the Helen Hamlyn Centre at the Royal College of Art and the Megaman Charity Trust Fund.

The project aims to explore the psychology of lighting the public realm and the practicalities of place making while reducing energy consumption. However, as sustainability in lighting is not just about energy efficient light sources, the project will also explore the role lighting can play in creating sustainable urban communities.

The two-year study will be led by Helen Hamlyn Research Associate Megan Charnley, a graduate of the RCA’s Department of Architecture. Professor Jeremy Myerson, Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre, said:

"Cities are seeking to move towards lower-carbon economy and powerful exterior public lighting schemes are not without its opponents - having received much media attention in recent times. Therefore, it seemed that the time was right to look at how lighting can contribute to sustainable urban development."

Exterior lighting company Paviom will be supporting the project. Simon White, General Manager at Paviom explained:

"We are delighted to support this project with the Helen Hamlyn Centre. We began Paviom with a commitment to high-level design combined with a strong environmental focus. We are looking forward to exploring how countries can reduce energy consumption, energy costs and carbon emissions and yet still illuminate public spaces."

StrobIlus Minor previews at LoveLight 2010

The Paviom stand at LoveLight featured two striking pendants. One was the instantly recognisable Strobilus pendant, created by lighting designer Jonathon Coles. But the second product lighting up the venue's grand alcoves was a brand new addition: Strobilus Minor, the downscaled version of its predecessor (now known as Strobilus Major). The smaller pendant, displayed for the first time at LoveLight 2010, features leaves made from recycled paper pulp that are shorter in length and greater in number than Strobilus Major Jon Hinton, Paviom's technical manager, helped put the pendant together on the morning of the event. "The leaves are closer together in the new model, so the overall effect is far more compact —iust like a pine cone," he said.
